Prep Overview
In the novel Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld, former scholarship student Lee Fiora, looks back on her high school experiences at the exclusive boarding school Ault. Now thirty-something, Lee tells her story in the past tense, but her adult self sometimes intersperses thoughts in the present as she summarizes lessons learned and points out things she wishes she could have told her younger self. Lee spent her years at Ault trying to fit into the profile she believed belonged to the other students. She had almost reached her graduation with her cover still intact when a newspaper reporter interviewed Lee and she shared her real self. Themes in the novel include the silent power of money, blindness to racism, and the belief that one gets his identity from his sexuality.
