Bernice McFadden’s novel Praise Song for the Butterflies takes a contemporary look at the practice of ritual servitude in West Africa. The novel follows the story of Abeo Kata, a privileged nine-year-old girl who is sold into slavery at a shrine after her family falls on hard times. Although in conversation with slave narratives in both American and world literature, the book makes a clear attempt to tell an eye-opening story about a practice that is still alive and well. The book is based on McFadden’s friendship with two women she met in Ghana in 2007 who told her about ritual servitude in West Africa.
