“Power” is a five-stanza free verse poem by American writer and activist Audre Lorde. She wrote it in 1978, in response to the acquittal of the white police officer Thomas Shea for the murder of Clifford Glover, a ten-year-old Black child. The poem constitutes an impassioned response to the horror of police brutality and white supremacy in America. At the same time, it reflects on the multiple ways that language can both be abused to harm others and harnessed for political solidarity.
