A fantasy novel dramatizing life under the sea, Laline Paull's Pod takes a long look at what life is like for dolphins, whales, sharks, and other creatures that live underwater, centered around an adolescent dolphin named Ea who finds herself adventuring far beyond her home, encountering many dangers on the way. Paull uses the connections between the different animals to elucidate certain aspects of human society. She tackles, among others, themes of gender equality, environmentalism, and the connections that adverse situations can form.
