In Stephen Kelman's novel Pigeon English when the 11-year-old first person narrator Harri learns that a young boy was murdered outside a local fast food restaurant, he and his friend Dean launch an amateur investigation. Having just recently moved to an urban England housing estate from Ghana with his family, the boy's murder is as odd to Harri as the way people his new neighbors speak and spend their time. He also wants to solve the mystery of the boy's murder, because he believes the boy was his friend. Throughout the novel, Harri's investigation complicates his understanding of the world and himself. The novel explores themes including death, fear, and spirituality.
