Piecing Me Together Overview
Watson's novel, Piecing Me Together, is the story of Jade, a Black girl who is a junior at an exclusive – and predominately white – high school. As Jade struggles to deal with the prejudices and stereotypes that often limit options for Blacks, she is honing her art and trying to find her own place in the world. She is granted access to several programs meant for disadvantaged and at-risk youth, and is justifiably angry when she is passed over for a program because she has been involved in so many programs. Jade feels that most people want to do things they believe will help her, but are unable to see that she can contribute to the world as well. The novel's main themes are manifestations of prejudice, appearances, and the importance of friendship.
