In Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter, Andrea “Andy” Oliver must grow up quickly after her mother, Laura, ordered her away after they witnessed a double-murder in their hometown of Belle Isle. With her mother under suspicion for her act that stopped the murderer but also left him dead, Andy realized there were things about her mother’s life that her mother had kept secret from her. Andy made up her mind to find out the truth about her mother and her mother’s real identity only to discover the truth put both her life and her mother’s life in jeopardy. Themes in the novel include the mother-daughter relationship, the treatment of minorities, and the inconstancy of good and evil.
