Pew Overview
In the novel Pew by Catherine Lacey, when a person appears mysteriously one Sunday morning sleeping on a pew in a church, a small Southern town is set on edge. The person does not speak. It is unsure if Pew, as the person is named, is male or female, or what race he is. As the people of the town try to determine from where Pew might have come and what they should do with him, they reveal deep truths about themselves in the way they treat Pew and the stories that they tell Pew. Themes in the novel include conditional charity, religious imagery, and the importance of identity/classification.
