Patsy Overview
Nicole Dennis-Benn's narrative Patsy focuses intimately on the lives of two people, Patsy and Tru, and offers a broad cultural and societal critique of many social issues. Intertwining the lives of a mother and her daughter living very separate lives in two different countries, the novel alternates between Patsy's experiences of being an undocumented, heartbroken immigrant in America and Tru growing up as a motherless girl questioning her gender identity and sexuality. Dennis-Benn tackles, among others, themes of gender identity, sexuality, immigration, racism, fat phobia and eating disorders, and motherhood.
