In the short novel, Our Sister Killjoy, or Reflections from a Black-Eyed Squint, Ghanaian author Ama Ata Aidoo uses a combination of prose and poetry to depict the travels of Sissie, a young Ghanaian woman, through Europe. During the course of the novel, Sissie works as a volunteer in Germany and lives amongst African students in London, England. Through Sissie's critical and skeptical perspective, Aidoo explores themes such as brain drain, global inequality, development discourse, racism and sexism.
