Our Short History Overview
Our Short History is a novel by Lauren Grodstein written in memoir style and narrated through single mother, Karen. The novel is comprised of a book Karen is writing for her son Jacob, now six-years-old, to read when he turns 18. Karen has been diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer and has only been given a few more years to live. Because she will not get to see Jacob grow up, she is writing him this book to share memories, stories, truths, and advice with him. Throughout the progression of the story, Karen’s ex-lover and Jacob’s father comes back into the picture, and as her condition fluctuates, she finds herself making decisions for Jacob’s future and coming to terms with the fact that she won’t be there for it. Our Short History explores themes such as death, love, family, and forgiveness.
