Only the Animals: Stories Overview
Only The Animals, a collection of short stories by Ceridwen Dovey, consists of ten distinctive narratives, each told from the point of view of a different animal narrator. As a work of historiographic metafiction, Dovey’s collection attempts to retell history by incorporating voices previously silenced or unheard. Littered with allusions to the literary and philosophical canon, Dovey’s work challenges her reader to reconsider their definition of “animal” and “human." Her narrators engage with the eternal questions of loneliness, authenticity, individuality, and of course, love and meaning.
