One of Ours Overview
One of Ours is a novel by Willa Cather. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923. The novel is both a stunning testament to the sacrifices made in World War One and a touching coming-of-age story. The story follows the journey of one Nebraskan farmer, Claude Wheeler, as he moves from frustrated discontent to liberating glory by remaining faithful to his idealistic principles. Along the way, Cather bears witness to the beauty of the American landscape and the horrors of war-torn Europe, considering themes such as the burden of inheritance, integrity and compromised principles, conflicting worlds, the wisdom of nature, and the American spirit.
