Once Overview
In the historical novel Once, the first book in the Once series by Morris Gleitzman, a young Jewish boy named Felix Salinger has been left by his parents at an orphanage in Poland for protection from the Nazis. When Felix goes searching for his parents, he encounters signs of the Nazis’ hatred for the Jews. However, the innocence of his youth prevents him from fully understanding what he is seeing. Felix makes up positive stories to explain the situations, until he must finally accept that the Nazis hate the Jews and are killing them mercilessly. Themes in the novel include the power of stories, Felix’s loss of innocence, and the emergence of heroes.
