Noughts & Crosses Overview
Malorie Blackman’s young adult novel Noughts & Crosses tells the story of Callum and Sephy, two children from very different backgrounds, and their quest to find belonging. It is told through first person narration, each chapter alternating between Callum and Sephy’s point of view. The novel takes place in an alternate universe where black people, Crosses, hold all positions in power while white people, noughts, are viewed as their subordinates. Blackman tackles, among others, themes of racism, discrimination, and hope.
