Netherland: A Novel Overview
Netherland is a novel by Joseph O'Neill set in the years directly following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It depicts the relationship of Hans van den Broek, a Dutch financial analyst based in New York, with his English wife, Rachel, and their infant son, Jake. The story is narrated by Hans from a point several years after the main events of the novel, when he and Rachel are reconciled in London. Hans' narrative weaves together the difficulties faced by their marriage as well as the mysterious murder of a friend of his, Chuck Ramkissoon. The novel deals with themes of identity, place, sport, love, and ambition.
