Negroland Overview
Margo Jefferson was born to an affluent black family and was raised in “Negroland,” her word for the small group of Negroes who were largely “sheltered” from the outside world and who led relatively privileged lives. She was taught that young Negro women must live a certain way, but her life changed dramatically with equal rights for blacks and for women. Through it all, she struggled with her own insecurities and to be happy with her life as an adult.
