Near to the Wild Heart Overview
Clarice Lispector's novel Near to the Wild Heart is a stream-of-consciousness collage of moments from the life of Joana, a young woman who has a mysterious and profound inner life. Joana's husband, Otávio, begins to rekindle a relationship with his ex-fiancé, Lídia, and impregnates her, setting up an inevitable conflict between Joana and Lídia. The novel focuses intensely on Joana's inner life, presenting both its positive effect, her extreme mental clarity, and also its negative effects, the deep conflicts that arise between Joana and most everyone.
