My Vanishing Country Overview
My Vanishing Country is a memoir by Bakari Sellers. Sellers is an American attorney, politician, activist, and commentator. Sellers grew up in the rural, impoverished, predominantly black town of Denmark, South Carolina. Bakari was a dedicated student, and he developed an interest in politics. At age 22, he became the youngest Black elected official in the country. In Bakari’s political career, his upbringing has motivated him to focus on issues of racial and economic inequality. Bakari uses this memoir not only to examine the events of his life, but also to examine relevant connections to America’s larger sociopolitical contexts. This book explores themes of race, poverty, history, and politics.
