Mrs. Osmond Overview
John Banville's Mrs. Osmond, published in 2017, is a work of historical fiction that acts as a continuation of Henry James' infamous The Portrait of a Lady, published in 1881. Whereas James' novel focused on young Isabel Archer's recent acquisition of a large sum of cash and her ill-fated marriage to Gilbert Osmond, Banville's novel picks up where James' left off. Isabel defied her husband to flee to her dying cousin's bedside and voyages across Europe seeking the counsel of various acquaintances and close friends, formulating a plan to come to terms with her husband's lengthy affair and intricate scheming.
