“Mother to Son” is a free-verse dramatic monologue by American poet Langston Hughes. It was originally published in the civil rights magazine The Crisis in 1922, and later included in Hughes’ first collection Weary Blues in 1926. It uses extended metaphor to explore the challenges facing Black Americans in 20th-century society.
