Philip Reeve creates a fantastical dystopian world full of morally grey characters in his novel, Mortal Engines. Every character is imperfect, yet doing what they believe is morally correct in order to survive. With a different level of suspense in each and every chapter, this novel weaves a seemingly simple world full of political intrigue. Reeve does not shy away from writing about the cruel nature that can lurk within humans but he also does not hesitate in showing their more caring side as well. Phillip Reeve is able to explore the darker nature of humanity while also giving a beacon of hope for his younger audience, and in doing so, creates an extremely intriguing dystopian novel.
