"Moonlit Landscape With Bridge" is a short story by English writer Zadie Smith. It was originally published in The New Yorker on February 10, 2014. The story, which shares its name with a seventeenth-century painting by Dutch artist Aert van der Neer, describes the experience of a Minster of the Interior for an unnamed country as he flees his home for Paris in the wake of a natural disaster. As he travels through his surroundings on the way to the airport, he is joined by a former prisoner who forces his way into the Minister's car. On their way to the airport, they encounter a number of displaced people thirsty and starving in the wake of the disaster. The story explores themes of charity, social image, and civilization's relationship with atrocity.
