Miss Jane Overview
Brad Watson's novel Miss Jane is a simply written but profound novel about the childhood and early adulthood of Jane Chisolm, who is born in rural Mississippi in 1915. Instead of being a tightly wound plot, the chapters of Miss Jane are almost loosely related vignettes that cover the significant moments of Jane's early life. Even though every other member of Jane's family -- older sister Grace and parents Sylvester and Ida -- is stony and emotionally distant, Jane is incredibly warm and optimistic. Much of Jane's life is colored by a birth deformity that rendered her incontinent and unable to have sex in any conventional way -- a condition that makes it very difficult for her to find friends or pursue lovers.
