Midnight in Europe Overview
Alan Furst's historical spy novel, Midnight in Europe, is a subtle and fast-paced story about European arms dealers on the eve of World War II. The protagonist of the novel is Cristián Ferrar, a Spanish civilian lawyer who has long lived in Paris as a political refugee. Ferrar is recruited by the Spanish Republic military to help them in their losing battle against the violent Nationalists, led by Franco. Ferrar is teamed up with the experienced arms dealer Max de Lyon, and the duo work to arrange shipments of weapons into Spain.
