Margaret Medina's novel titled Merci Suarez Changes Gears covers several months in Merci's life. As a sixth-grader, Merci is uncertain of how to keep up with all the changes in her life. School is different and so are her relationships with her peers. She discovers that the mean girls may not be as mean as they seem and the shy girl may become a best friend. Things are also different at home as her grandfather, Lolo, begins to change due to Alzheimer's disease. As the novel comes to an end, Merci realizes that change is inevitable and not always a bad thing. The novel's main themes are coming of age, changing relationships, and the importance of home and family.
