In Tara Stringfellow's novel Memphis, after Miriam flees her tumultuous marriage with Jax, she moves her daughters Joan and Mya back to her hometown of Memphis. Almost as soon as they move in with to the old family house with her aunt August and cousin Derek, 10-year-old Joan remembers the day Derek raped her seven years prior. Over the course of the following months and years, family life in Memphis unleashes a host of specters from the women's pasts. In order to move beyond these traumas and terrors, Miriam, August, and Joan must confront their fears. The novel explores themes including memory and the past, trauma and violence, and love and longing.
