Memorial Overview
Memorial is a novel by Bryan Washington. The story follows two main characters. One of the protagonists is Benson, a Black, homosexual man in his twenties who lives and works in Houston, Texas. The other protagonist is Mike, Benson’s boyfriend of four years. Mike is originally from Japan, and when he learns that his estranged father is dying of cancer, Mike goes to Japan to see his father. Around the same time, Mike’s mother arrives in Houston, and she has no choice but to live with Benson until Mike returns. The novel explores themes of love, family, and cultural connection.
