Matrix: A Novel Overview
In this historical novel, Lauren Groff imagines the life of the 12th-century poet Marie de France. In the novel, Marie is sent to an abbey at 17 years old by Queen Eleanor (based on Eleanor of Aquitaine) with whom she is in love. Marie ultimately becomes abbess and experiences religious visions through which she imagines improvement projects for the abbey. The novel spans Marie's entire life and explores themes related to religion, the strength and struggles of women, and community, among others.
