Everything you need to understand or teach Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar.
Kaveh Akbar's debut novel Martyr! follows Cyrus Shams, an Iranian-American man from Indiana who develops a fascination with martyrdom following the deaths of his parents and his own struggle with alcohol and substance abuse. Cyrus' interest in martyrs eventually leads him to New York City, where another Iranian-American artist named Orkideh is hosting an exhibit at which she allows visitors to ask her questions about her impending death from a terminal illness. Set primarily in New York and Indiana, but spanning both time and distance to feature sequences from 1980s Iran, Martyr! chronicles Cyrus' development as an artist and a person while exploring themes of heritage, death, creativity, addiction, and queer love.
