Madonna in a Fur Coat Overview
Madonna in a Fur Coat is a novel set in the first half of the twentieth century in Turkey and Germany. Told partly from the perspective of an unnamed narrator, and partly through the diary of the protagonist Raif Efendi, it tells the story of Raif’s time spent in Berlin as a young man, how an intense bond with a painter named Maria Puder changed his life for better and for worse, and how the story of Raif’s life can prevent the narrator making the same mistakes himself. It deals with themes of intimacy, gender roles, and the power of art.
