Mad Country Overview
Samrat Upadhyay's Mad Country is a collection of eight short stories set largely in the late 20th/early 21st century in Nepal, examining the country's culture, mores, topography, and struggles. Its protagonists include a justice-seeking investigative journalist, a wayward hippie, an ordinary woman unjustly detained as a political prisoner, and a Nepali college student carried away by political unrest in Ferguson, Missouri. The collection explores themes of inequality, ill-fated love, oppression, and identity.
