They become embroiled with people who have ties to organized crime, landing John in jail and putting Lucky on the run from the police. As the novel comes to a close, Lucky learns that her biological mother is now a successful attorney who is in a position to help her once she brings down some bigger criminals. The novel's main themes are identity, luck, good versus bad, trust, and the need to connect.
