In Tania James's novel Loot, in 1794 Mysore, India, Abbas is summoned to the Summer Palace to work with a French inventor, Lucien Du Leze, on the construction of an automaton. Because the sultan has commissioned the project, Abbas feels grateful, but afraid. After developing a relationship with Du Leze, Abbas begins to dream of a more expansive future for himself. However, a series of political and interpersonal disasters threatens Abbas's journey towards success and contentment. Written predominantly from the third person point of view, the novel explores themes including displacement, loss, and belonging.
