In Colm Tóibín's novel Long Island, Eilis Fiorello is shocked when she discovers that her husband Tony Fiorello has impregnated another woman. Terrified that the woman's husband will fulfill his promise to leave the baby on Eilis's doorstep, she travels back to Ireland to visit her mother. While away from her Long Island home, she tries to decide how to resolve her marital issue. However, a reunion with her former love (Jim Farrell) complicates Eilis's state of mind and introduces an array of new emotional conflicts. Set in 1979 and written from the third-person point of view, the novel explores themes of loneliness, longing, and secrecy.
