Lauren McBrayer's Like a House on Fire follows the life of a woman named Merit, who decides to head back into the workforce after several years of working as a stay-at-home-mother while attempting to jumpstart a painting career. Set primarily in the San Francisco area, the novel details the relationship between Merit and her new boss, Jane, a dynamic and headstrong woman twenty years Merit's senior who immediately begins to shift Merit's perspective on her own role as a wife, mother, and woman.
