Leah on the Off Beat Overview
Becky Albertalli’s young adult fiction novel Leah on the Offbeat is a warm, relatable story. As a sequel to the award-winning book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Albertalli writes the witty, often sarcastic, yet loving perspective of Simon’s closest female friend Leah Burke in her final semester of her senior year at Creekwood High School. Leah faces prom, graduation, and a new life ahead of her, but between those life altering events she juggles tangled friendships and relationships with dramas of their own. She soon finds herself in the midst of an interesting love triangle between herself, her huge female crush Abby, and her best male friend (and Abby’s boyfriend) Nick. Albertalli shows the reader the challenges of female bisexuality, coming out, and confessing a crush while weaving in the themes of economic inequality and accepting the imperfect.
