Leading Men Overview
Christopher Castellani's novel Leading Men features the iconic and passionate love affair between celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams and his paramour Frank Merlo. The third-person narratives of Hollywood actress Anja Bloom and Frank Merlo alternate, outlining their time Italy together in the summer of 1953. The beautiful and icy Anja is swept into the glamorous lives of Frank and Tenn, traveling across Italy together before they help launch her career as an illustrious actress. At Memorial Hospital in 1963, Frank is dying of lung cancer, waiting desperately for his love to return to him for the last time. At the turn of the 21st century, Anja has in her possession the long-lost final play of Tennessee Williams. Her narrative intertwined with Frank Merlo's deals with themes of love and emotional turmoil, homosexuality, fame and stardom, and terminal illness.
