Later Overview
In the crime thriller Later by Stephen King, James “Jamie” Conklin details his ability to see and correspond with the dead. Unfortunately for Jamie, his uncanny ability is exploited by Liz, a dirty cop trying to save her career. Jamie’s mother, Tia Conklin, had warned him to keep his ability secret. So, Jamie was hurt and confused when his mother told her girlfriend, Elizabeth “Liz” Dutton. Liz had changed into a dirty cop when she turned to transporting drugs to help with finances after the Great Recession. She called on Jamie to help find a bomb. Later, she endangered his life when she used him to help her find where a drug lord had hidden a stash of high-dollar narcotics. Themes in the novel include the loss of innocence, the impacts of the Great Recession, and situations that give people reason to invite evil to enter their lives.
