Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera is a first-person account of a young lesbian woman's political and personal awakening during a summer internship in Portland, Oregon in 2003. The novel starts in the Bronx, then is set in Portland, with a brief segment in Miami. It is a semi-autobiographical account of Rivera's own experiences in the early 2000s. Rivera tackles, among others, themes of feminism, queer identity, racial politics, and womanhood.
