“Joining the Colours” is a four-stanza poem by Irish poet Katharine Tynan. It first appeared in the Westminster Gazette in 1914, shortly after the start of World War I, and examines the departure of a group of Irish men. The poem uses juxtaposition and conflicting motifs to contrast the glory and the horrors of war.
