It's Kind of a Funny Story Overview
Ned Vizzini's moving novel, It's Kind of a Funny Story, supplies insight into a young man's heartfelt struggle with clinical depression. Main character, Craig Kilner, is your typical teenager commonly concerned with school, girls, fitting in, and an unknown future. What makes Craig's story remarkable is that he bravely admits his difficulties and checks himself into a psychiatric facility. Mental illness can be worsened by the pressures of today's societal climate. Craig, however, refuses to succumb to his suicidal ideations and decides that there must be a life free of hopelessness. In the end, Craig appears to have found that bright life. The unfortunate pivot to this narrative's background is the author's real experience with depression that causes him to take his own life only seven years after the publishing of this novel. This only reiterates the truth that mental illness affects many and unravels in various ways.
