In the Heart of the Heart of the Country Overview
“In the Heart of the Heart of the Country” is a short story by William Gass, originally published in the New American Review. In 1968, it was published in a story collection of the same name. In the story, an unnamed narrator describes the rural Indiana town in which he lives. In doing so, he explores his own personal senses of sadness and solace in relation to those qualities within among the town itself. The story explores themes of isolation, mortality, love, melancholy, and rural life.
