In the Clearing, by Robert Dugoni, is the third novel of The Tracy Crosswhite Series. Tracy is a Seattle detective who picks up the case of a Seattle woman named Angela Collins who killed her husband, Tim Collins. The woman is claiming that she killed him in self-defense. However, her teenage son admits to the same crime. At the same time, Tracy is also investigating the cold case of Kimi Kanasket, a teenager who was killed while walking home from work in 1976. While looking for those responsible for Kimi's death, revelations help Tracy figure out what really happened to Tim Collins. The novel's main themes are death's far reaching effects, guilt as punishment, prejudice, and vulnerability.
