Hurricane Summer Overview
Asha Bromfield's novel, Hurricane Summer, is the story of a young woman who discovers truths about herself, her family, and her world during a few weeks of a summer spent in Jamaica. Tilla has always felt hurt that her father constantly chose to leave his family in Canada in favor of his family in Jamaica. However, she comes to accept that she cannot expect anyone else to make her happy or give them the power to decide who she is. As a hurricane rips through Jamaica and her beloved cousin dies in the aftermath, Tilla realizes that she has faced a storm of her own and has emerged stronger. The novel's main themes are courage, cultural differences, and the weight of secrets.
