How We Fight for Our Lives is a memoir by Saeed Jones. The book is a coming-of-age told in a series of anecdotes. Saeed Jones is a homosexual African-American man who grew up in Texas with his single mother. Over the course of the book, Saeed grows up and explores his sexuality, discovering how it intersects with issues of race in America. In the final section of the book, Saeed writes about his mother's premature death and his grieving process. How We Fight For Our Lives explores themes of race, sexuality, love, power, vulnerability, and grief.
