In Lorrie Moore's second person short story "How to Be an Other Woman," even after Charlene discovers that her new lover is married, she agrees to keep seeing him. She tells herself that although being a mistress feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable, she can inhabit this identity. However, over the course of her relationship with the lover, Charlene feels increasingly confused about who she is supposed to be and who her affair suggests she is becoming. Toying with formal conventions throughout, the short story explores themes including identity, alienation, and control.
