In Angie Cruz's novel How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water, when first person narrator Cara Romero loses her job at the factory, she simultaneously loses her footing in the world. After two years of unemployment, she enrolls in the Senior Workforce Program. Over the course of 12 weeks, she meets with a career counselor, Lissette, who she begins to regard as her pseudo-therapist. Her meetings with Lissette ultimately compel Cara to talk through a litany of changes and traumas in her personal life. Via a dynamic first person narration and inventive narrative form, the novel explores themes including survival, motherhood, and friendship.
