Hollow Kingdom Overview
Kira Jane Buxton’s novel Hollow Kingdom offers a twist on the familiar zombie apocalypse genre: all humans are devolving, leaving domestic and wild animals to survive in a world with new rules. The story is primarily told by a witty crow named S.T. who has always wished that he were a MoFo—his word for “human.” In a few short chapters, other animals share their stories of loss and triumph. Most of the action takes place in Seattle, Washington, where the author relocated with her husband after falling in love with the trees. The novel explores themes of environmentalism, self-identity, and the danger of screen addiction.
