In Jenny Xie's novel Holding Pattern, main character Kathleen Cheng moves home to Oakland, California after her boyfriend Oren breaks up with her. Helping her mother Marissa prepare for her wedding to a wealthy, young entrepreneur, however, only aggravates Kathleen's unstable sense of self. Over the course of her time living back home, Kathleen is gradually compelled into confrontation with her past and herself.
